The Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) was opened in 1995 as an educational institute on the benefits of wearing footwear that “feels as good as it looks”. Courses on conservative foot care, foot health and overall wellbeing are given to healthcare professionals, shoe designers, and the public. EPI conducts events on the art and science of pedorthics and how it relates to improving people’s lives. Pedorthic footwear design, therapeutic shoe fitting, pedorthic pre-certification, and retail business training courses are offered in its facilities in Manhattan. (eneslow.com/epi)

Eneslow trains third year podiatry students at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (nycpm.edu) in pedorthics in our facilities. Mr. Schwartz is currently an adjunct instructor in the department of orthopedic sciences at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He participates on the faculty of Aetrex University, and on the advisory board of foot.com and Pedorthic Newswire. He has been a faculty member of the pedorthic programs at Ball State University, Florida International University, Hospital for Special Surgery, New York University Medical Center, Northwestern University, Staten Island University, Shoe Service Institute of America, UCLA, and others.

Mr. Schwartz has published many articles on pedorthics and footwear which have appeared in Current Pedorthics, M. Jahss: Foot & Ankle, Podiatry Management, Biomechanics, PM News, Pedorthic Newswire, Healthy Living from the Ground Up, etc.

For the past forty years he has had a particular interest and focus in diabetic neuropathic feet and conservative treatment approaches. He has lectured on “pedorthic management of diabetic foot disorders” at US Public Health Service Hospital, Carville, LA, PFA annual symposia, NYU Medical Center, and national and regional conferences devoted to the diabetic foot all over the world. He is recognized as a leading expert in diabetic footcare by the medical community and fills prescriptions to prevent and heal ulcers, chronic Charcot deformities and partial foot amputations.

Retail Award

Mr. Schwartz is currently on the board of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce in New York City (MCC.org). He is chair of the Second Avenue steering committee to help Second Avenue merchants and small businesses develop and promote “Shop 2nd Ave. – It’s Worth It” campaign affecting the Upper Eastside neighborhoods. He is chair of MCC’s Retailer’s committee, helping improve competitiveness of Manhattan’s retail businesses.

He serves on the board of the Shoe Retailer’s League, an association of local shoe retailers.

Eneslow provides free shoes for the needy. It has provided in excess of 100,000 pairs of shoes to organizations such as Soles4Souls an international charitable footwear foundation (soles4souls.org), Council of Concerned Medical Professionals (CCMP.org), Tender Care Human Services (tendercareny.org), International Rescue Committee (rescue.org) and others.

Mr. Schwartz served on the Board of the National Shoe Retailers Association (NSRA) from 1995 to 2010, on their strategic planning, nominations committees and as vice chair. He was chair of NSRA’s education committee from 2000 to 2009. (nsra.org)

Mr. Schwartz was President and on the board and executive committee of the 23rd Street Association, a New York City civic and trade organization until it completed its mission and closed in 2009. This included the 23rd Street Community Projects a 501(c)3 Foundation with the theme of Waste Not, Want Not, to advocate on behalf of conservation and preservation.

Mr. Schwartz is a past president (1986-1988) of the Pedorthic Footcare Association (PFA). He served on the board as Chair of their Pedorthic Educator’s Committee from 1985 to 1992, and 2009 to 2010. (pedorthics.org)

Mr. Schwartz has been a footwear and footcare industry consultant and entrepreneur since 1973. In addition to Eneslow, he has worked with many companies and organizations to enhance their business, product, and marketing development. Some of his clients have included Dana Davis, Dansko, Drew Shoe Corp, Durea, MBT, New Balance, RYN, Silipos, Smartwool, and Thorlo. He currently consults for Aetrex Worldwide, DeMatteo Monness LLC, and the Foot Care Comfort Center in Tokyo, Japan.

During his footwear career he was owner and marketing Director of Apex Foot Health Industries from 1973 to 1982, and Holland Shoe Comfort where Mr. Schwartz and his organization imported and distributed Durea Footwear and other European brands from 1999 to 2005.

A frequent lecturer to health professionals, footwear retailers and the public on retail, marketing, footwear and foot care, Schwartz's professional missions are to help people improve the quality of their lives, particularly from the foot up and to help small owner operated retail businesses survive and thrive.

In 1987, Mr. Schwartz received the “Seymour Lefton Award” by the Pedorthic Footcare Association, PFA’s most prestigious honor, for his advancement of the pedorthic profession.

In 2008 he received the "Al Singer Award" by the National Shoe Retailers Association, “in recognition of traits so essential to progress: independence, innovation, perseverance, a quest for challenges, and an unwavering love of humanity.”

In 2009 Eneslow was named “Retailer of the Year” by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.

In 2010 Mr. Schwartz was named "Corporate Hero" by the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation for his participation in the “Arthritis Walk” and educating healthcare professionals and the public on the importance of walking to improve health.

In 2012 Schwartz was recognized by Tender Care Human Services "in recognition of support and dedication to Robert Schwartz from The Laura Vitolo Pastina Art Therapy Program and The Heather on Earth Music Therapy Program."

In 2015 Eneslow was awarded the "Age Smart Employer Award", an initiative of the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center and NY Academy of Medicine created to “honor workplaces that value workers of all ages. It is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

For recreation, Mr. Schwartz enjoys walking, hiking, swimming, and tennis. His current passion is helping people find their best selves.

What can a customer expect from a Pedorthic Evaluation from you?

A customer can expect that I will measure both of your feet.  I will watch you walk in both your own shoes and any shoes you try on.  I will look for stability and any gait issues.  I will recommend and try out ready made orthotics and small scale shoe modifications and foot aids to make you more comfortable.  I will look at the fit and wear patterns of your existing shoes.  I will discuss with you what your lifestyle shoe needs and concerns are.

Shoe makeover or new purchase – which will benefit the customer more?

What is your current shoe wardrobe?  Do you have a lot of shoes in good shape that you’d like to wear but never could?  If so, a shoe make over is right for you.  If not, you should buy new shoes.

What does Eneslow’s uniqueness mean to you?

Eneslow’s uniqueness means that we are delighted and able to be successful with people who haven’t been able to meet their shoe wear needs anywhere else.

 Eneslow assessments are one of the most important things we do. That is what makes us so unique, different and stand apart from the others. We ask questions and listen to our customers in order to find a solution to their problems. We are interested in helping anyone and everyone. We measure feet, and check your shoes by performing a pedorthic assessment. We also use the I-Step machine to check the pressure of the feet.

A "Shoe Makeover" may work when the shoes are customized to a customer’s feet for support and comfort. New shoes may be needed when existing shoes are not a good fit even after the makeover. New shoes may be used, when looking for great support and comfort that will last long even though we can surely refurbish your previously owned footwear. A "Shoe Makeover" is perfect for a person with nice shoes that would find it a shame to get rid of.  Showing people the difference between the shapes of their feet versus the shape of their shoe is a jaw dropping eye opener, which we don’t mind explaining at length with our customers.

Eneslow cares about fit more than anyone. There are so many variables that we see on a day to day basis and we are able to deal with them all. From amputees to LLD’s we, have more experience than any firm out there.  A pedorthic assessment is when we analyze your gait and walking pattern to identify the best last of shoes for our patients. It involves a foot print, a range of motion check, worn shoes evaluation and watching walk without shoes.

As a CPED, it is my job to do a pedorthic assessment to every customer that walks into our facility.  Eneslow pedorthic assessment includes- I-step, Harris mat, Brannock measurement, worn shoe evaluation and gait analysis.  Combined with our expertise, we find the right shoe that fit the individuals foot shape.

It is always easier and beneficial to work with an existing shoe over a new one because a worn shoe is part of our pedorthic assessment which tells us the story about the feet.  We could individually modify shoes to make them more comfortable and feel better.  But it all depends on the condition and structure of the shoe.

Customers get their feet measured and assessed in order to determine their foot problems and how we can solve them.

Since the foot changes, a "shoe makeover" would not be beneficial because it would not be a satisfied fit. However, new shoes would provide a better fit because for the anatomy tends to change.

I am 72 years old; I have been selling shoes for over 40 years. I am married 51 years and have 3 grand children. I am an intricate member of the great sales team at our Little Neck location. I owned my own family with shoe store and my last position at Yonke I was a buyer and shoe designer.

 The pedorthic assessment is our tool to help the customer the correct shoes. We analyze their needs by watching them walk, checking the motion and feet by asking what kind of problems they may have if any.

Sometimes making a favorite shoe over could be rather costly to the customer. It still would be an old refurbished shoe. Perhaps selling a new pair would be more beneficial to their needs.

 I have been in the shoe business for about 35 years.  In which 30 of them I have been in service with Eneslow, since 1983.  I am presently a Board Certified Pedorthist since 1994, and have been working with the Management Team since 1985.

The Eneslow pedorthic assessment is the process of open ended questions and evaluation of the foot wear and feet of the customer or patient.

I believe every situation is different depending on the condition of the shoes and the fitting of the shoes.  In many occasions we can salvage the customer’s shoes and make a customer for life.

During the course of my career in this business, which spans forty years, I have come to don several hats, and the days when I started “lasting” leather on custom shoes in a factory seem to belong to a very distant age. 

I must admit that my training as a high school teacher of French did little to prepare me for my new endeavor in the shoe making world.  How could it if one, without a semblance of a transition, jumps from syntax, morphology, and semantics to bunions and hammertoes? 

Nothing could be more dissimilar to parts of speech than parts of the foot.

Yet, I decided almost instantly one warm September day in 1973 that the foot would be my new calling.  During these forty years, I have designed, made and sold shoes.  I made orthotics.  I worked with famous athletes, as well as, movie and television personalities. So, if you, the prospective customer, want to pick my brain and take advantage of me, I mean take advantage of my extensive experience, stop by Eneslow.  It will be an experience you will not soon forget.
